What is the difference between energy and power?

Energy is a quantity; power is a rate. Energy is the total amount of work that can be done or heat that can be transferred, measured in joules (J), kilowatt-hours (kWh) or BTU. Power is the rate at which energy is used or produced, measured in watts (W) — joules per second. A 100 W incandescent bulb left on for ten hours consumes 1 kWh of energy.

The most direct way to feel the difference is a light bulb. A 100 W incandescent bulb burning for ten hours consumes 1 kWh of energy. A 10 W LED delivering the same brightness over the same ten hours consumes only 0.1 kWh. The power rating describes instantaneous intensity; the energy figure describes the size of the bill. The relationship is like the diameter of a tap versus the time it takes to fill a bucket — equally important, but not the same thing.

This is the distinction headlines routinely blur. When a news report says a country has installed 50 GW of solar, it is quoting power — the maximum instantaneous output under ideal conditions. How much energy those panels actually deliver depends on hours of sunlight, cloud cover, panel orientation and a dozen other variables. Installed capacity answers how fast a system can run; generation answers how far it actually ran over a year.

The difference has real policy consequences. A country can build impressive installed capacity and still fall short on energy if its plants run too infrequently; conversely, a small but efficient and continuously running fleet can deliver a substantial quantity of energy. Energy is also discounted along the way: electricity loses roughly 5–8% travelling through transmission and distribution networks, and in the United States about 61% of primary energy is lost before it ever reaches the end user.
